| In this seedy, emotionally-charged film noir set in contemporary Los Angeles, Anjelica Huston is the horse-playing mother of con artist John Cusack who doesn't like her son's romantic interest with sexual swindler Annette Bening. The movie was done very well in the best film noir tradition, but ultimately John Cusack proves to be a weak link. Still both Benning and Huston shine, chewing up scenery like the pros they are.
